"I don't think it will work here. Utter wastage of time and energy" Ramesh reacted as usual when I asked his opinion on a new change in the Performance appraisal system. This is not the first time he reacted like this. His nature was like that. Object at the outset itself. Any thing and every thing. Whether it is good or bad.
I stopped consulting with him if any change needed to be initiated. He had to just implement !
We stopped to go for lunch with Karmakar and Chatterji. Karm is a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar and Chat is a big fan of Saurav Ganguly - for obvious reasons.Whether cricket match was there or not on that day, during lunch the topic will be the same. "Sachin was not actually LBW in so and so match, his leg was no way near the offstump". "But the way Ganguly bowled that day, that too with his right hand, remarkable". As such we were so upset with the highly predictable sambar and its contents, or the pieces of those over-aged and over-matured chicken in that biriyani. We could not tolerate these highly predictable discussions, so stopped going with them.
We had a deflection master, Prakash. Any work allocated to him, he knew how to deflect it to somebody else. "Oh this presentation, actually Som did it exactly same way couple of weeks back, why don't you ask him?" "Actually the retail team is much better of reviewing this code, more suited in their environment". In a matrix organization, we would request to get some help from peers, though we knew that was not their prime responsibility, and these were the answers we would get from Prakash in such occasions. Needless to say, we knew what his answer would be, so stopped approaching him even for any work that would be of some help to him as well.
I had a cousin, when ever I went to his house, his father would start playing those videos from CD that his younger son had sent from Gulf. I had to sit with him and enjoy those moments. Always. I can understand his pride for his son. But then, my interest was more on what is going to come from kitchen, the delicious stuff aunt had prepared. So the moment I come to know that aunt is not at home, I run away giving some excuse or other.
Predictability at times can put you at a disadvantage. Even my wife - no - I don't want to talk about my wife - I will also become too predictable !!
It could be because of strong bias or possessiveness, or tremendous love, pride, or aversion it can be any thing that one tends to talk about and only about a particular subject. Understandable. But then be sensitive to others' interests also. Too predictable would make you boring, people may avoid you. At the same time don't be too unpredictable also, people may think you are insane and they will avoid you more !!
However, in the case of a well defined scope of deliverable or an output from you, you need to be as predictive as possible in terms of schedule and quality.
So you decide when you need to be predictable and when you need to be a bit unpredictable. But be always reliable !
Have a great Sunday. We had rains, predicted by Met dept here last night!
