om jai jagdish hare

Those people were walking at a brisk pace. Approaching towards me from opposite side. Laurel and Hardy in the front. Followed by three mosquitoes at the back. In the park, on that 3 feet wide jogging track. They were 50+ age, not as young as me ! Suddenly it happened. "Om jai jagdish hare..." song came out loudly. From the mobile from one of those. All of them stopped. Hardy quickly picked up the mobile from his pocket. Held it in both hands and closed his eyes. After a a minute, took both hands up and touched his bald head with that mobile. Then laurel and all the other 3 followed suit in succession. High way was blocked for solid 5 minutes. They stopped walking. Made others stop walking!

I had an uncle, Venu. ( when didn't I have an uncle?). They were a huge joint family. Venu the second son, his parents had exactly 5 sons and 3 daughters - G8 ! (Venu uncle passed away a few years back, now it is G7, heard "G8 to G7" news some where today? ) One day morning, Venu uncle was performing the morning pooja at home. "Om madhavaya namah, om kesavaya namah..." suddenly he stopped looked aside, "Smitha....ullovunathin baise... @##$%^#$%^^%^" (in Konkani, Smitha keep quiet, - no need to translate those special characters, they mean more or less the same in any language !!). He was upset with his daughter who was crying loudly. He quickly turned back and resumed his pooja with that bell in his hands -"Om madhavaya namaha, om keshavaya namah....." Which ever part of heaven you are Venu uncle, we miss you, you were so nice and such a no-nonsense person, I am just trying to narrate a funny side of yours to highlight the topic of discussion today.

Topic of discussion today -one needs to focus on what he is doing.

We had an employee, Namashivayam. religious person, strong devotee of Lord Shiva. His forehead will fully be covered with vibhuti ( bhasma ) all times. He will walk in to factory in the morning. Will stand in front of the that time punching machine. (We had those punching machines to record time in those days, one need to insert his hard paper based card in to the machine, pull one lever. The date and time will be punched in black ink on that card, to record our attendance.) He would keep his bag aside. He would remove his shoes and socks and keep it 6 feet away from the punching machine. Then he would touch the punching machine, fold his hands and pray for some time and then only he would punch. He would wear his socks and shoes back, would take his bag, open it and would take out a packet. Then he would go around that huge complex and carefully spread sugar/rice pieces from that packet at various places in the complex. To feed those poor and tiny ants.By that time it would be time for him to have lunch and sleep, as others do, till it is time for out punch. The employees themselves would say as what they had to do in the factory is just "two punches and a lunch" !!

You may be wondering what was my job there ! I was a trainee. The supervisor had told me "There will not be any assigned work for you. You just observe what others are doing". I was highly focused on what I was told to do "observe one of them as close as possible"!!

My first day of my last job. After joining formalities, I was sent to the manager who interviewed me. He directed me to another manager for whom I would be working. I walked towards a few buildings away in the campus in search of this unknown manager. The manager asked me to take a seat. "I don't know why they have sent you to me", that was the opening statement to a highly charged and motivated person, who was extremely hungry for a change. Then onward he never looked at my face, explained a few things while he was watching people walking on that busy inside road. I also don't remember what all he had told as I was also watching closely what he was watching ! ( Afterwards, we became good friends for ever and worked together very well ).

I want to focus fully on the job on hand. As if it were my first job with all the interest. Also as if it were my last job in my life time ( similar to what Jobs had told ). But what to do, when I see other "interesting" things which are perceived to be happening only once in a life time, I give up.  Also when I feel that I am let down, I give up! Also when I get fully distracted due to unwanted things, I give up. Focus gets shifted. All in those other rare occasions, yes I am focused.

Bye (Be with You Everytime).
