I thought of getting into the middle of something the other day. There was an argument going on between an autorickshaw driver and an African national. From a distance I could make out that the dispute was on fare charged, and definitely they were not debating on the strategy on how to bring in peace in African region. I thought my multilingual skills would help in becoming an interpreter for them. As I started moving towards them, shouts became so loud, they were not listening to each other, so language didn't matter to settle the issue. I didn't lose hope even then to prove my mettle. But before I could put forward another step, I saw the auto driver falling right in the middle of the road, profusely bleeding from the nose. The foreigner had middled his punch well ! However the driver had achieved in grabbing something in the middle between him and the foreigner - a good portion of the African's T-shirt while falling - at least to wipe his face ! I decided not to get in there for my own good.
At times, being in the middle is a disadvantage. The eldest child gets all the importance, since he/she was the first one. The youngest child gets all the pampering, since he/she is a "putta", "chinna", "kanna", "lallu", "pappu"" etc. The middle ones have to be really smart to get any attention. But, those are the days when people had many children. Now with single child concept becoming prominent, that single child always comes in the middle of parents anyways !
Luckily, I know who Sachin Tendulkar is. I am sure almost all of you know him as well. For those who do not know him yet, he is a legend in the game of cricket. Middle order batsman in tests, who can middle almost all balls bowled to him at his will. I am pretty sure, if you want to be a good commentator in cricket, you have to pass through the acid test of identifying which ball the batsman middled well, however rare it may be and praise about that achievement. And look at those stumps, the poor middle fellow, he has to carry twice the load of those bails on him from both sides compared to his left/right partners !
Cricket is not the only game played in the middle. For that matter almost all games. You see that referee running in the middle with no aim of attacking or defending, no aim of even scoring a goal - in a football match. He has to whistle to award a free kick which would many a times be a result of a deliberate kick by some player. More load on referee these days, in the middle of all these things the poor fellow has to remember to bend down and spray white foam before the free kick, it doesn't matter how strongly he does that, the spray would vanish in a couple of minutes. And in Tennis like games, the net gets maximum beating - though everybody knows the fact "no net in the middle, no serious game".
In a team, you may have people in the middle whom you would like to show case while projecting a success. But remember, it is a team effort and the success is achieved by good support of other team members to that successful person in the middle. Imagine you decided to show a victory symbol to others, but for some strange reason you decided to see it yourself. All you would do is open your palm and raise your middle finger with the forefinger standing close to him, equally smart. Imagine your thumb decided to pull down and suppress that forefinger. I am sure it will not be a good symbol for people who witness it. Moral of the story, every member in a team is important, and co-operation among them is equally important.
Food price inflation is something in the middle for a long time now. Some people say wholesalers directly loot farmers. Some other people say retailers directly loot the consumers. But there are these middlemen who loot everybody indirectly! And a few people who know about these middle men only talk about them.
Many of us go through that mid-life or mid-career challenge. Not being sure how upper or how lower we are in that middle band, too anxious to know how far or near the end is ! And there is this middle class income people, who have the luxury of postponing their necessary but not essential expenses by 5 years or more - by investing in tax relief long-term instruments ! And incur expenses for the same things with the principle amount plus all the interest accrued !! For people below them anyways everything is essential and for people above them nothing is necessary, they already have everything !!!
Being in the middle helps. It at least helps you in avoiding painful people, if not anything else, by saying - "sorry I am in the middle of something".
Try to middle things as much as possible with a balanced approach to achieve the desirable results.
When you try to get into middle of something, beware of entry barriers - more importantly, have a good idea of exit route. Otherwise you would land up in a situation similar to that of prince Abhimanyu, getting trapped in the "Chakravyuha (or Padmavyuha) ". And by chance you end up in the middle of something without your knowledge and things heat up around you - stay calm. Just think that you are not near the end, but only in the middle, and you will definitely find a way out.
