Choice is yours

"Which mutual fund in which I should invest?" somebody asked me today. Obviously it is beginning of the month and the fellow is temporarily cash rich. Also, he might have recently read Warren Buffett's advice  - "Don't save what is left after spending; spend what is left after saving". My cash rich friend  would have decided to invest in a mutual fund and then consume less or no onions in this month ! Obviously, he is a bit confused. Mutual fund guys say that past performance is not an indicator of future, and also they ask you to read the offer document carefully. If you are competent enough to understand what they say in that document, and you have all the time to read it carefully, then why should you invest in their fund at the first place?

In such a decision making dilemma, my policy is to go by  FIFA choice- First, Ideal, Favorable, Appropriate choice that meets my criteria.

As usual, we were sitting in bench waiting for project, that too in those back benches. Since time killing mechanisms like FB, Twitter were not available, our hobby was to gossip. That day the difference was the person at the center. He had just returned from Florida after a long stint and he had many stories to tell us. The stories that would add more fuel to our burning sensation of going abroad. Suddenly, the resource manager appeared at the far end looking for people. We ducked underneath the desks to prevent him from seeing our "idle" faces. We were almost sure that he was searching for people to do testing of somebody else's code. As such, we hated testing our own programs, where was the enthusiasm for us to test other's ugly programs?

But to our surprise, the resource manager was looking for somebody to go for a US assignment. We all showed interest irrespective of the work there - whether it was coding, testing or nothing ! "The need is urgent and the person has to fly with in a week" he looked at the US-return guy ignoring all of us, obviously he was the only person with a valid visa ! "I can, but I want to get married soon, so I have started looking girls" murmured the US-return. Resource manager was in no mood to give up - "How many you have seen so far, if you have already seen many  then you would never marry soon, instead go for this assignment. Take my case, I had decided to marry the 10th one and then realized that the 2nd one was better". I didn't realize that he was talking about FIFA choice then, but I felt sorry for his wife. And even now I feel  very happy for his 2nd  "would have been" wife !!

Then there is another type of person, he just wants to look for a choice which he does not want to make. For him nothing is ideal, nothing is perfect, nothing will match his criteria. "Which car do you think I should upgrade to?" he would ask you. If you suggest some choices he would react " no that car is not fuel efficient, the other one will incur major maintenance cost" his reasons are many. As if his current 10 year old car is super efficient. He just wants to remove the guilty consciousness with in him that he has not thought about an  upgrade, while all his friends are driving new cars.

All this lecture holds good for people who have some time on hand to make a choice. Those who always have habit of looking for a choice at the  last minute, and if at all they managed to read this till this point, please ignore what ever you read so far - FIFA choice is not meant for you, you will have to make the available choice anyways, and have to believe that it was the best !
